Robin Williams narrates this powerful documentary about Father Damien and his work with the Hawaiian leper colony on Molokai. The story of Father Damien began from humble beginnings over a century ago. His remarkable kindness and courage have become legend throughout the world.
Frightened by the leprosy epidemic spreading rapidly through the Hawaiian islands in 1872, the government adopted a strict segregation policy. A bleak leprosy settlement was established on the island of Molokai. Sufferers were abandoned by the outside world and forced to live in miserable surroundings with no medical care, very little food and minimal shelter. In 1883, a courageous young Belgian priest asked to be transferred to the island and began ministering almost single-handedly to the quarantined population.
This documentary traces the path of one humble man who dedicated his life to easing the pain and suffering of hundreds of people.
