Beginning in 1932, Stalin began his campaign to prevent the independent natured Ukrainian people from rising up against him by ordering their mass starvation. The Great Famine of 1932-33 was the result, and is known today as the Holodomor (The term Holodomor is derived from the Ukrainian expression moryty holodom, which means “to inflict death by hunger”.)
Bread Alone tells the story of Anatoly, a simple farmer on a mission to save his dying daughter, seeking out the last scrap of food in the country. His journey brings him face to face with his wife’s killer and with the God responsible for his suffering.
