Doctrine in Movies
What inspired me to write about doctrine is the fact that there are still a number of people that watch Christian movies for doctrinal truths and that is not where we typically find God’s truth.
What is doctrine anyway? Doctrine, according to the dictionary, is a belief or set of beliefs held and taught by a church, political party, or other group.
Where do we, as Christians, derive those set of beliefs? One and only One place…the Bible, God’s inspired Word.
We, as a people, tend to follow people and pastors and leaders and friends and movies and so on…
That is a dangerous path to follow when our only surety is the Bible.
There are so many choices for entertainment these days, and that includes Christian movies. We have to be careful that we don’t watch these movies for truth. Most of the movies are made for the entertainment value, as well as to encourage you in your faith or to bring someone to Jesus.
A Christian movie is not supposed to lead you away from God’s Word, but towards it!
Just to name one example out of many, is ‘Heaven is for Real‘. This film has a lot of controversy surrounding it because it seemed that things that happened conflicted with the Bible. So here is the question…
Why do we believe heaven is for real because someone says it is? Why do we believe certain things have to happen in the end times because we’ve seen it in a movie?
The truth is…we believe other people and what our eyes see and our ears hear rather than what God’s Word says.
I hope that doesn’t mean we’re falling into the trap of having itching ears to hear what we want to hear.
If any of us have fallen into that trap, let us ask forgiveness.
1 John 1:9 – If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
In other words…repent, turn around and listen to what the Bible says.
The Bible says it best in 2 Timothy 3:16, 17 – All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
Remember – a doctrine cannot be based on 1 or 2 verses. If God wants us to understand an important truth, there will be many verses on the topic.
Let’s always check everything we see or hear with the Word of God so we might be safe in His arms and shielded from erroneous beliefs.
