What If? ~ CFDb Movie Review & Recommendation
Fifteen years ago, Ben Walker (Sorbo) made a decision to leave his college sweetheart Wendy (Swanson), and ultimately his faith, in order to pursue a lucrative business opportunity. Now on the verge of marriage to an equally materialistic fiance, he is visited by an angelic mechanic (Ratzenberger) who tells him that he needs to see what his life would have been like had he followed God’s calling.
Suddenly, Ben finds himself married to Wendy with two daughters, including a rebellious teen (Ryan), getting ready for church on a Sunday morning, where he’s scheduled to give his first sermon as the new pastor.
If Ben wants to get back to his old life, he must first learn to appreciate the value of faith and family, and perhaps rediscover the love of his life. In the tradition of It’s a Wonderful Life and The Family Man, What If… tells the story of a man whose glimpse into what he’s missing reminds him of what he truly wants.

Well, what can I say about this film? I loved it. I’ve seen it 3 times and enjoyed it all 3 times. This is so funny, yet very serious in it’s ultimate message. I wonder how many of us find ourselves in the same situation, wondering about God’s plan for our lives and how we chose to walk away from that perfect plan and what plan are we on now? Plan B, Plan X, Plan Z? Sometimes I think I’m way past Plan Z, which is a real shame!
So, how about Debby Ryan who plays Kimberly Walker in this film? She is just plain adorable and plays a great character in this film. She does an excellent job as the daughter and I am looking forward to her playing in other films in the future.
So here is the great question, the whole point of this wonderful film…What if?
I think all of us, at one point or another, ask ourselves this question. What if I had taken that other road, what if I didn’t pass up this opportunity? What if I ended up with my high school sweetheart instead of the person I’m married to now? What if I chose to have children, or not to have children? The questions are ENDLESS! I don’t believe God really wants us to ask those type of questions. I do believe He wants us to ask Him what choices we should make, at the time we are making them, or before we are making them.
We can’t live in the What if? world…We must live in the present and we must remember that when we do sin, we have a promise in I John 1:9 – if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Does this movie lead us closer to God, or to repentance? I believe it does and that is the main reason I truly love this film!
