Film Description:

Woodlawn – Dare To Believe!

A film based on an inspiring real-life story about love and unity in a school torn by racism and hate in the 1970s.

In 1973, a spiritual awakening captured the heart of nearly every player of the Woodlawn High School football team, including its coach Tandy Gerelds. Their dedication to love and unity in a school filled with racism and hate leads to the largest high school football game ever played in the torn city of Birmingham, Alabama, and the rise of its first African American superstar, Tony Nathan.

I have been reading things about the movie Woodlawn. I am so proud of the things said about Jerry Stearns, he is my
nephew. He was very special to me and I admired him so much for the way he handle the things that had happen to him in his life time. I would call him just to encourage him and I would be the one that was encouraged. He had been at my house on the 6th of December and I am so thankful that I got to spend some time with him that day. I had made him an
Auburn pillow out of the Auburn colors and I am thankful I got to give it to him that day..

You added drama to your movie by distorting the truth about Woodlawn High School. First, Tony Nathan did not unite the general population of the student body. I had several classes with him and never witnessed him ever discussing the topic with other students. He did however, lead several blacks to protest and leave school early one day. Second, the players and coaches got along just fine as did the black and white players. Hank Erwin drove the team bus and worked at McDonalds and only showed up periodically. Yes, he and Wales Gobal did preach to us, but they never solicited our cooperation to mediate the race problem that you reference with the student body. Mainly, because there really wasn’t a race problem as you describe it. The differences between whites and blacks were no worse than in any other Birmingham school. I know because I was a teammate of Nathan and periodically gave him rides home after football practice.

I remember the summer of 1973 and the day the ‘movement’ started. We were having a summer football camp at the school and Coach Gerald called us all into the gym. Wells Goble walks up and the first words out of his mouth were……..’ if you died right now would you go to Heaven or Hell’? You could have heard a pin drop. Later all you heard were tear drops. That is when it started.

  4. Todd Gerelds says

Tony never led a revolt from the football team. He nearly quit as a sophomore. But, Mrs Louise, “Mamma” Nathan wasn’t having any of that. Tony was a quiet leaser. There were people on both sides of the racial divide who wanted Tony to take on a role he didn’t want to take on. He let his work in the classroom, the court, and the field make statements. My dad, his coach, thought nothing but good thoughts about Tony. Tony was a quiet, reluctant hero. You have to understand tht in making movies, the filmmakers must compress events that occurred over several years in to a season or two. There will definitely be things in the movie that will make a Woodlawn or Banks student flinch. However the overall theme and story of God’s saving grace at work in the school and in the community was pretty amazing. I was affected by it.

My cousin “Jerry Stearns” who was the assistant coach for Woodlawn during this time and who is played by Kevin Sizemore in the Movie, was telling me how proud he was of the movie. I was talking with Jerry just two weeks before his untimely death about this movie and how inspirational it was and again how proud he was of it. I sure he will be watching it on the Big Screen in Heaven! Thanks to all who had a hand in the making of this movie.

There have been some good Christian movies out lately. Woodlawn is by far the best. The script, acting, & quality, (including the soundtrack) is awesome. Keep up the good work!!!. These kind of films are going to be instrumental in turning this country around, & providing great entertainment at the same time!! God’s speed.

Yet another film promoting the false narrative that black people are the perpetual victims of white racism. Today, the exact opposite is true, nearly all violent hate crimes being committed in America are Black on White. If Christian film makers really want to help America heal, stop beating the dead horse and write a movie script that will touch the hearts of angry, hateful black teenagers who are killing, raping and beating innocent White and Asian people across the entire nation.

this is with out a doubt one of the most moving emotional films ever made. the performances in the film were just fantastic—–the music, everything was so good. this is not just another Christian film—-this is a major work of art. there should be academy award nominations—–nic bishop gives one of the best performances of any film that I have ever seen. every performance in the film is outstanding and that’s what sets it apart from other films. this is one great movie.
