‘Greater’ ~ CFDb Movie Review
Greater – The story of Brandon Burlsworth, possibly the greatest walk-on in the history of college football.
Brandon Burlsworth is perhaps the greatest walk-on in the history of college football. Brandon had always dreamed of playing for the Arkansas Razorbacks, but was considered too short and too fat to play Division I. Undeterred, Brandon took a big risk and walked on in 1994.
Written off by fellow teammates and coaches, Brandon displayed dogged determination in the face of staggering odds. An extremely devoted Christian, Brandon never cursed or drank. He was genuinely humble and low-key. He worked harder than anybody, on and off the field, becoming the first Razorback to earn a Bachelor’s “and” Master’s degree while still playing. The overly-fat kid who was once an embarrassment to his teammates and an annoyance to his coaches, ended up becoming the most respected player in the history of the program, changing the lives of all he touched.
This was an amazing film!
Whether you’re of strong faith or none, it was well made and just a great story! Also – at least in my view – this film really helps bring some light to the so often asked question of “why do bad things happen to good people”.
It’s hard on anyones faith when devastation comes, but just look at the message brought at the end by the other players. Brandon had touched so many lives in his short life, and brought even the least of all believers to their faith in God.
“God works in mysterious ways” – I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s heard that all their life! I think if Brandon had lived on to fulfill his dreams, he may have very likely been an amazing player and lived out a wonderful life however, in the end he would have been just another lost and forgotten Christian All-Star. Because Brandon died at what most would consider to be such a crucial and unexpected point in his life, he was able to bring meaning to his death and brought even more people to God – after all, this IS based on a true story!
