CFDb Interviews Joe Boyd ~ Actor/Producer/Writer

Joe Boyd

= > How did you first get involved in the film industry?

I was studying (for fun) with the Second City, a renown comedy and improv school, in Las Vegas. That hobby lead to me working as a comedic actor in Las Vegas for several years. Stage just kind of lead to screen and I began acting in commercials and some TV shows in the early 2000’s. I started producing films in 2007.

= > Can you share with us about your first acting role.

I think I was about eight years old in a church play…my first professional acting role was a pretty big one…I was cast as Michael Just in the Las Vegas/New York company of Tony N Tina’s Wedding. I worked in the show at The Rio Casino for over two years and did more than 500 shows.

= > Please tell us how you got the role in ‘A Strange Brand of Happy’ and a little bit about the role.

Since I am the producer, I guess I gave myself the part. The truth though is that I didn’t really want to do it. Brad Wise, the writer/director and my long time creative partner wrote it for me. He wouldn’t let me try to cast someone else though I tried at least 5 or 6 times. In the end, I’m very happy that I did it. I think Brad could see I was right for it all along.

I play David Weathersby, a 30-something rather aimless bachelor who loses his job and finds himself in a bit of an existential crisis. That sounds too heady…he basically wants a girl and a job, but he needs something much more. It was a hard role for me because David is a lot like me in terms of personality…I find it easier to play characters who are different than me.

= > What has been your favorite acting role thus far?

I wrote and directed a mainstream poker-themed comedy called ‘Hitting The Nuts‘ in which I played an Amish farmer learning to play Texas Hold em…that was my favorite so far.

= > What is your favorite job within the filmmaking industry and why?

My favorite job is probably still acting, particularly comedy. But I think I am better at producing than an actor. I like producing as well…I tell people it’s a lot like playing RISK…a lot of strategy and alliance building. I’m pretty good at RISK so it all works out…

= > How can others learn more about you and your work?

For me personally, you can follow me on twitter at @JoeBoyd or read my blog at…but make sure to check out to see the trailer and learn more about the film coming out Sept. 13. I’m really proud of what our team has put together. I hope a lot of folks get to see it in the theaters.
