‘Superbook’ ~ CFDb Movie Review & Recommendation
In 1981, the Christian Broadcasting Network created a children animated Bible series as part of an outreach to the nation of Japan. Little did we realize what impact the series would have in Japan and throughout the world. The English name for this series was “Superbook”.
Research performed during and after the outreach showed that this series was an unprecedented success. Superbook, also known as Animated Parent and Child Theater (Anime Oyako Gekijo), is an anime television series produced by Tatsunoko Productions in Japan in conjunction with the Christian Broadcasting Network in the United States. Over 8 million people a night watched Superbook on Japanese prime-time television, 104 episodes were produced and aired on television throughout Japan, and the Bible became the best selling book in Japan. From Japan, the Superbook series went on to air throughout the world from Asia to North America… by John J. Schafer
Two of our All Time Favorites we are reviewing
In the Beginning
Superbook is the most AMAZINGLY ACCURATE Kids Series. We loved watching the series as kids, and even as adults, we now watch them and are amazed at the subjects they tackle. It is not always 100% accurate but pretty close, especially considering the short time frame they are given to tell a story.
Our two favorites we are featuring here:
In the Beginning & Revelation
Although I didn’t take notes on In the Beginning, Roger and I kept talking about how great it was after we watched it. We do remember one part that was fabulous about the boy facing temptation. Very powerful.
For Revelation, it is brought out how this is nothing that cannot be forgiven and that time is short. They also show Satan disguised as an angel of light and how the boy recognized that Satan wasn’t really his friend.
People make choices, that is not God’s fault.
Urging to obey the Holy Spirit and be faithful to the end.
This also brings out how awful Satan really is and how all evil will be destroyed forever and the restoration of all creation.
I would love to know what you think about the very end of this episode with the parents and how they handled the situation. I would have loved to have seen it a little differently, such as “we’ll discuss your punishment later”.
Update on 3/1/2015 – Every once in awhile CBN will play Superbook episodes. They are ALL good. We highly recommend the entire series. They are so accurate to the Bible, more than any other series we’ve seen. A couple of quotes within 2 of the Superbook episodes I wanted to highlight here:
“I play for the One that gave me the skill” – David and Goliath Episode – Wow – what if we all thanked God for all our talents and our blessings? And what if we played and worked for the One that gave us those skills and blessings? What a different world this would be.
“We have no king, but Caesar” – He is Risen Episode – This statement made me realize that every time we deny our Savior, we are basically saying the same thing as the crowd that said these words above. I want to always say…”My Only King is Jesus!”
One more thought – they have the most amazing Salvation Song for kids. I wish they would even play it on the radio! Short, but powerful!
