A Touching Story
For those of you not on the Rebel Pilgrim e-mail list,
here is a great story Joe Boyd shared on August 21, 2013.
I had an experience this Sunday in Costa Mesa, California similar to the experiences I have had everywhere I have gone to talk about A Strange Brand of Happy at various churches. A girl in her late twenties came up to me after the service. At first she smiled and shook my hand, but when she tried to talk her face changed. Her eyes reddened and filled with tears. “I needed that,” she said. “This is my first time at a church. I was raised an atheist, but when my father died a month ago I decided there might be something more out there.”
She paused and cried. I wasn’t quite sure what to say.
She continued, “I want to thank you for being honest about your doubts and telling your story and letting me feel like it’s ok to not have all the answers. I’m going to come back to church next week to keep looking for God.”
She added, “…and I’m going to take my friends to see your movie.”
That’s the kind of stuff that excites me. People admitting that they are on a journey. Prompted to look for more. Willing to have the hard discussions. Seeking the universe for something or someone bigger than themselves. People coming home.
That’s what good stories can do – what they always do. A good story is the spark that illuminates the first few steps on the pathway to hope. What we are doing in an attempt to get this movie into theaters is hard. The system isn’t made for movies like this. We have to be subversive…to fight our way in. But it’s what people want even if they don’t know it yet. They want stories that spark hope.
I left a full time job as a pastor because the people I most wanted to “preach” to, tend to not come to church. Luckily, my new friend in California did last week. Her friends, on the other hand, didn’t show up at church. Instead, they are going to see our movie on September 13th. And maybe a spark of hope will ignite a search for more in one person’s heart at The Starlight Triangle Square Cinemas before the night is over.
Hearing her story and others like them all summer from New York City to Los Angeles and all over the heartland have emboldened me to believe even more in our mission.
Don’t Forget to See ‘A Strange Brand of Happy‘ Opening Weekend, beginning next Friday, September 13, 2013.
